Yoga and Diving

We all get stressed on a daily basis, but ocean can provide beautiful quite place to calm your mind and be totally present of your self and it is very similar effect that you can achieve with yoga.

-Connection between Yoga and Diving-

Diving has a lot more in common with yoga than you might think. If you live more in the present moment, diving can provide relaxation you have been searching for.

And, as yoga combine breathing exercise (Pranayama) and physical posture (Asana), it is the thing they have in common.

As a scuba diver, we achieve this meditative state of mind every time we go into the water.

There is a rule in diving world ‘’Never hold your breath’’, because of this, in diving we are focusing on breath. Steady and continuously breathing is the main diver and yogi state.

In yoga, it is very important that every inhalation and exhalation are in accordance with physical movements, because breathing is our main connection between the body and the mind.

With regular exercise of breathing, we are allowing our lungs to expand, which is the best benefit for diving.

By inhaling and exhaling fully, the carbon dioxide in your lungs will decrease in big amount, that keeps your breath steady and calm. If you do not exhale fully carbon dioxide level will start to increase and it can follow with panic underwater.

Yoga teaches you how to remain calm and refocus your mind, helping you to deal with challenging situation same as with all the heavy scuba gear, new environment and different way of breathing underwater.

A diver who is relaxed in body, breath and mind, becomes one with water.

A stillness of yoga allows you to let go and just ‘’be’’ in the water.

The physical posture (Asana) practiced in yoga, strengthen and stretch muscles that are important.

Just like you learn to move gracefully in yoga from one posture to another, the same thing is happening in the water, your awareness should be full on your movements, slowly and gentle.

Happy Diving!
